Match Bear's parents, Mama and Papa Bear, came from a long line of bears that managed fire's role in keeping ecosystems healthy. But many in the forest community didn't fully appreciate Match Bear's talent for skillfully playing with matches. The little fire starter was an important contributor to cycles of renewal in Nature.

Meanwhile, human settlers looking to build more cabins pushed for blanket suppression rules, claiming ALL fire is bad—even controlled burns that cleared the brush of overgrown habitats to yield new growth when guided by stewards like Match Bear. Goldilocks, the CEO of Forest Settler Boss INC, imposed strict suppression and terminated Match Bear, ordering it out of the forest. Shocked and devastated, Match Bear felt betrayed—suddenly cut off from the only ecosystem and community it had known, loved, and served.

The Spiral

The trauma sent the little spark spiraling for a time– without the forest and the woodland friends it grew up with, it was unsure of who it was in the world. There weren't any support services to help it transition to a new life, nor a way to re-establish a community it desperately needed. In its depression, Match Bear roamed and slept in the urban parks of the Pacific Northwest, often drinking itself to sleep with hot sake.

A New Clear Path

While hiking in the park, we found Match Bear passed out from sake on the trail and felt great sympathy for the little spark. We convinced it to come to our workshop with us and our puppy, Zuco. Hearing Match Bear's story, we recognized we could create AI that mirrors its path-clearing abilities to help others navigate similar displacement and uncertainty.
